South Uist (Outer Hebrides), early 1970s

The Outer Hebrides launch site was on South Uist. The rockets used for launch here were Petrel and Skua. The launch platform was quite unique, an adapted Bedford lorry, the same size as the emergency fire engine ('Green Goddess') used today when we have fire brigade strikes. We flew from London to Glasgow and then Glasgow to North Uist. The main hazards here were wind, rain, cattle and sheep, and possibly the hearings of the amount and types of whisky drinking!!!!!!
