Weekly Notes from the Yohkoh Soft X-Ray Telescope

(Week 35, 1998)

Instrument Status

The SXT instrument is working well after a couple of minor mishaps due to eclipse operations. This resulted in a rotation of the spacecraft which was quickly corrected. Solar activity was relatively high this week with a number of M- and X-class flares, including an extremely long duration event. The Whole Sun Fortnight campaign ended this week with coverage of a active region AR8307 together with a watch on some southern extensions of the north polar coronal hole. Details can be obtained from ISAS or GSFC. See the weekly operations report for details. The GOES level has been quite dynamic as AR8307 continued across the disk. As usual, the GOES time series for the week is shown below. Click it for enlargement.

In the display above (click to enlarge), the colored lines show the times of SXT images that currently are on-line at ISAS. The purple lines are flare mode. The gaps will be considerably reduced when the NASA telemetry arrives and gets reformatted. For a summary index listing of the weekly science reports, click here.

Science nugget: Solar eclipse as seen by the Yohkoh spacecraft

An annular solar eclipse over SE Asia took place at 22 Aug 1998. Yohkoh was well-positioned to see four (!) episodes of this solar eclipse. Two of these episodes are shown here
